Windows XP is soon to be obsolete
10th May 2013 (Advice)

Windows XP has been around for 11 years now and only the much older machines are left with this Operating System. Microsoft will soon stop all support for XP commencing on the 8th April 2014.

What does this mean?
Without Microsoft support you will no longer receive the monthly critical security updates that can help protect your PC from harmful viruses, spyware and other malicious software.

What can I do about it?
Firstly consider the age of your PC. If it is over 5 or 6 years old we suggest spending the next 9 months thinking about getting a new PC. You could potentially upgrade your PC to Windows 8, but you would first need to find out if your old computer is up to the task.
Use this upgrade assistant to determine if your PC can upgrade to Windows 8

If you are unsure about what to do and need some further advice, please feel free to call us and we will try and help. We also have a new training course out for Windows 8 so if you do move over to the new Windows 8 Operating System and need help, we can come to you and provide 1-1 training to get you started.

Windows 8 - What's it all about?
23rd April 2013 (News)

Windows 8 has now been available on new computers since October 2012 and the general feedback that I am hearing is not great. Especially for Laptop and Desktop users as the Windows 8 platform was designed for the Touch Screen generation.

I have recently written a Blog about Windows 8 sharing some helpful information that any new Windows 8 novice should read as the layout is different and when you do get to the main Desktop we are all familiar with, you find there is no Start Button.

Basically there are a couple of new rules to understand. Firstly it's all about the corners. Moving your mouse pointer to the corners opens up a new menu. Secondly, a lot of functions that were on Windows 7 and below are still in the new Windows 8 but are all hidden. Right Clicking shows these functions and buttons when on the specific App or program.

Some helpful tips

  1. If you really hate the Metro Screen (Screen with the Tiles) you cannot get rid of it but you can simplify how quick you can get into your Desktop. Move the Desktop Tile to the Top Left corner (normally where Email is). Then when your screen starts up, all you need to do is press enter and you will be straight into the Desktop.
  2. Remove any Tiles you don't really need or use to make the Metro Screen more accessible and not spread over 2 or 3 pages.
  3. Shutting down your PC can now be done with the Power Button so no need to hunt for Shutdown in the right hand Charm Menu.
  4. Add 'My Computer' to the start screen. Start by opening Windows Explorer-you'll see an index tree with Computer at the top. Right click on it and select Pin to Start. You'll now have a Computer entry in the start screen which you can drag to your preferred location. To add this shortcut to your desktop as well, right click on the desktop, choose personalize, and Change Desktop Icons.

It's never too late to get online...
19th March 2013 (News)

New online research from Age UK shows that nearly 4 out of 5 (78%) older people who use the internet believe their lives have improved by being online, with nearly 1 in 4 (23%) saying they feel closer to friends and family as a result, and 42% declaring that they now cannot imagine life without the internet.

Carried out by YouGov on behalf of Age UK, the online poll also revealed just how the lives of web users aged 55+ have been transformed:

•44% have made savings online
•Nearly 1 in 3 (32%) pursue hobbies
•1 in 5 (19%) feel like they are more independent as a result of being online.

The internet can make a huge difference to people's lives. Whether it's making savings keeping in touch with family or looking up new hobbies, for a growing number of older people, the internet is no longer a luxury but an essential tool for daily living.

Easy PC Advice have attended several Age UK members' houses and helped them get started with Computers and the Internet. As we have the lowest rates in the area it is also cheap to get up and running once you have your PC.

See our Training page HERE for more information on 1-1 tuition.

Do you Auto Renew your Anti-Virus? We would't recommend it.
4th December 2012 (Advice)

In life we all want things that are quick and simple. However in the past years we are all cutting back on things due to price increases. Anti-Virus should not be one of them, and so you set your Anti-Virus to auto renew so you never have to worry about it again and you'll always be protected.

The problem with Auto Renew is that you will pay the full price for your renewed Anti-Virus and for the sake of a reminder in your calendar and a few minutes online, you'll see that you get a much better offer if you actually go and buy another years subscription in the sales or somewhere where there are continuous offers.

Let's take Norton Anti-Virus for example. At Easy PC Advice we swear by Norton but if you Auto Renew, you'll be paying around £50.00 to renew where we currently sell it for £30.00 for the same annual protection. £20 saved just by a few minutes and as each CD gives annual protection you don't have to wait until your PC tells you your subscription is about to expire before you go and get it. So always buy when you see prices at their lowest or the best offers.

Another reason for going out and buying a CD every year is in case something happens to your PC, you always have instant protection by installing the software instead of having to remember that Anti-Virus account login details that you setup 3 years ago and now need to call an 090 helpline number at £1.50 per minute to restore it.

For information on our Anti-Virus protection please visit our Online Store or call us and we will be happy to assist.

4 Ways to Speed Up your PC
6th November 2012 (Advice)

Here are 4 simple ways you can speed up your PC for FREE:

  1. Ensure you have at least 10% of Hard Drive space free on your C: Drive. The C: Drive is used as a tempory location for memory and files whilst your PC is working away. If you don't leave enough space on your PC you are putting more pressure on your Memory and the PC will slow.
  2. Defragment your Hard Drive. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter. Here you can analyze your Hard Disk to see how fragmented it is. Defragmenting it will make it faster.
  3. Check what programs you have set to run at Startup. Having many programs running whilst your PC is trying to load the Operating System can affect it's performance. Ask yourself if you really need that program to be open from the word go or whether it is ok to open it when needed.
  4. Clean out your Temporary files including your Temporary Internet files. They are what they say they are... TEMPORARY and are only there to assist the pc in that actual moment you were running that program or viewing that certain website. After this time they are classed as dead files and can be removed.

So there you have it. 4 simple ways to make your pc run much quicker so that you can get on with the task you wanted to do without having to wait ages.

File Recovery Virus
16th October 2012 (Advice)

This month Easy PC Advice are receiving more requests for removal of a new virus known as the File Recovery Virus. File Recovery is a PC virus that will display fake alerts, claiming that several hard drive issues where detected on your computer. In reality, none of the issues are real, and are only used to scare you into buying File Recovery and stealing your personal financial informations.

Below is a screen shot of what the bogus screen looks like and if you come across this, please do not pay them money as this only makes it worse. Call Easy PC Advice and we can remove it for you safely.

Solid State Drives (SSD's) will phase out the current Hard Drive (HDD)...
12th September 2012 (News)

As technology moves forward the computer will inevitably get smaller and faster, and to assist it people are starting to turn to Solid State Drives (or SSD's) to replace the well known Hard Disk Drive (HDD). An SSD is a little like a memory card you get in a camera but combining fast data transfer rates with instantaneous access times makes it a better option for homes and businesses.

The SSD is designed to provide improved application performance with transfer speeds up to 6GB/s, much, much faster than a regular HDD and with no moving parts it is less likely to fail too. Generally costs have been high to purchase these but with demand the prices are slowly coming down. Definitely one to watch.
